Who It's For

Still in Pain After Weeks of Trying Everything?

Shockwave is the treatment clinicians turn to when conventional approaches have reached their limit.

Pain that just won't go away

You've rested, stretched, taken anti-inflammatories. Weeks later, maybe months, the pain is still there every morning.

Standard physio hasn't been enough

Exercise therapy and manual treatment haven't resolved it. You need a more targeted stimulus to get the tissue healing properly.

Told to avoid injections or surgery

Your GP or consultant has recommended against steroid injections or surgical intervention. You need a non-invasive alternative that actually works.

Shockwave therapy doesn't mask pain, it addresses the underlying tissue pathology. By stimulating blood flow and triggering a controlled healing response, it gives chronic tendons and soft tissue the biological signal they need to repair.

The Science

How Shockwave Therapy Works

High-energy acoustic pulses are delivered through the skin directly to the injured tissue using a hand-held applicator.

Stimulates healing

The mechanical energy triggers a biological response, increasing blood flow, stimulating growth factors, and activating the tissue's natural repair mechanisms.

Breaks down calcifications

In conditions like calcific shoulder tendinopathy, shockwave directly fragments calcium deposits, something no amount of stretching or physio can achieve.

Desensitises pain pathways

Shockwave modulates local nerve fibres, reducing pain sensitivity in the treated area, often producing rapid pain relief even after the first session.

What the evidence shows

Shockwave therapy has a robust body of clinical trial evidence across multiple tendinopathies. It is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for calcific tendinitis of the shoulder and is widely used in elite sports medicine.

What to Expect

Your Treatment Journey

From first contact to full recovery, here's what happens at every step.

1
Assessment & Diagnosis
Your physiotherapist will take a full history, assess your movement and pain patterns, and confirm shockwave is appropriate for your condition. We'll set a baseline and explain exactly what to expect from treatment. If shockwave isn't right for you, we'll tell you, and your assessment fee applies to whatever is.
30-minute appointment, £50
2
Shockwave Treatment Sessions
Each treatment session lasts around 20–30 minutes. Acoustic pulses are applied directly to the affected area, you'll feel a tapping or pressure sensation. Some mild discomfort during treatment is normal and is actually part of the therapeutic process. Most patients tolerate it very well.
Once weekly for 3 weeks
3
Review & Full Recovery
We reassess you after each session and adjust parameters as needed. Most patients see clear improvement over the course of treatment. Following your course, we'll discharge you with a home programme to maintain results and prevent recurrence.
Ongoing support included

No GP referral needed. Call 020 8546 6464 or book online below.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Most conditions respond within a course of 6 sessions, delivered once per week alongside physiotherapy. 6 sessions is the clinically recommended number for all tendon conditions, it gives the tissue the biological stimulus it needs to complete the healing cycle. During your initial assessment your physiotherapist will set clear expectations for your specific condition. We reassess after each session and won't continue treatment beyond the point where it's producing results.
You'll feel a firm tapping or pressure sensation over the treated area, and some discomfort is normal, particularly over an acutely tender spot. This is generally well-tolerated and settles quickly during the session. Mild soreness for 24–48 hours after treatment is common and is part of the normal healing response. We adjust the intensity to keep you comfortable throughout.
Many patients notice a reduction in pain by mid-course. Full therapeutic effect continues to build for 6–12 weeks after completing your course as the tissue remodels. Some patients feel immediate post-session relief from the analgesic effect of shockwave; this is a sign the treatment is engaging the nerve fibres correctly. We set realistic expectations at your assessment.
In most cases, yes, we encourage continued movement and exercise throughout your course. We'll advise on any temporary load modifications in the 24–48 hours following each session when the tissue may be sensitised. Continuing to use the affected area appropriately is generally part of the rehab plan, not something to avoid.
Yes, shockwave therapy has an excellent safety record and is non-invasive (no injections, no surgery). There are a small number of contraindications including blood-thinning medication, open wounds, active infection, pregnancy, and bone growth plates in children. Your physiotherapist will screen for all of these during your assessment. Serious adverse events are extremely rare.
No. You can self-refer directly, simply book an assessment online or call 020 8546 6464. If you have relevant medical letters, X-rays, MRI or scan reports, please bring them along as they help us give you a faster, more accurate assessment.
Radial shockwave (RSWT) delivers pressure waves that disperse outward from the applicator, effective for superficial tendons and soft tissue. Focused shockwave (FSWT) concentrates energy at a precise depth, useful for deeper structures or calcifications. Your physiotherapist will select the appropriate type (or combination) based on your specific condition and tissue depth.

Don't Wait Another Month in Pain

Chronic tendon conditions rarely resolve without the right intervention. The sooner you start, the faster you recover.
